Cruise Business Review reports that Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines and Saga Cruises are rumored to be considering ordering new ships from South Korean shipyards. The report suggests that Saga may order a 30,000 GT ship, but does not mention a possible size for a Fred. Olsen ship.
Meanwhile, a separate rumor is that Club Cruise may order three 20,000 GT ships from a South Korean yard. In 2007, the company was reported to be interested in ordering four ships of that size.
South Korean shipyards are some of the world’s largest, and are experienced in building many types of ships, but have yet to enter the cruise ship market. However, with European yards having full order books well into the next decades, it has long been suggested that some smaller operators might look to Korea for new tonnage.
