As a loyal Mac user, I was delighted to read this post from The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW), and not just because it links to this site. (I confess, that’s how I found it…)
It turns out that beginning with Freedom of the Seas in 2006, new Royal Caribbean and Celebrity ships have been equipped with my favorite computing platform. According to the post, “Apple and Nanonation provided a solution proposal that apparently knocked the socks off of the [Royal Caribbean] executive committee, and some of the proposed tech began to make its way into the ship’s operations.” Apple Mac Minis and Xserves form the back end of the ships’ flat-panel display signage in public areas. But better yet, in the future, Mac Minis and Apple TVs will back up the TVs in both passenger and crew cabins, with the goal of having “every television on the ship … backed by a Mac.” The plan is already moving forward with Celebrity Solstice, which will have over 1,000 TVs backed up by Mac Minis and Xserves. I knew I liked the look of that ship…!
