Costa Mediterranea Adds Spa Cabins

Costa continues to expand its “spa cabin” concept across the fleet; after giving Costa Concordia and Costa Serena the biggest spas at sea and the world’s first dedicated spa cabins, Costa Mediterranea is gaining the company’s latest wellness concept as well. In its April 2008 refit, the ship will receive a newly upgraded “Ischia” spa together with 44 dedicated spa cabins and a new, dedicated wellness restaurant.

This expansion indicates that the spa cabin concept has been successful, as does the fact that Carnival has chosen to emulate it for Carnival Splendor (a ship that is very closely related to the latest Costa vessels). This just goes to show how appealing the idea of “something extra” is to a certain segment of today’s large-ship passengers, with the increasing proliferation of “concierge class”, “spa class” and other accommodations that are similar to standard cabins but feature extra amenities and services for an often-hefty price premium.
