An interview with Celebrity and Azamara president Dan Hanrahan posted on the Travel Weekly web site yesterday cast doubt on rumors that the line might return to Bermuda with a Century-class ship in 2009 or 2010 after Hamilton’s waterfront revitalization project (which will allow larger ships) is completed.
According to the article:
“Azamara will offer longer, more exotic itineraries, Hanrahan said, and for now, is fulfilling its current contract with Bermuda that it had under the Celebrity Zenith.
Hanrahan added that the cruise company will not return to Bermuda on an Azamara or Celebrity vessel in the near future.”
Celebrity positioned two ships in Bermuda every year from its inaugural 1990 season to 2005. The departure of Horizon (now Island Cruises‘ Island Star) from the fleet meant only one ship in 2006, the Zenith (pictured above in Hamilton last year), and this season, Zenith’s departure meant company sent only the much smaller Azamara Journey from its new more upscale brand. It was already clear that the company would not return in 2008; however, until now, the possibility of a return in 2009 or later had been left open.
