From my friends over at Costa Cruises I have a couple of nice photos of the bow section of the new Costa Pacifica floating out at Fincantieri’s Palermo yard. The bow section was launched the old-fashioned way, down a slipway in Palermo on Monday, and will now go to Fincantieri’s Sestri Ponente yard in Genoa where it will be joined with other sections to create the latest Costa mega-ship.
The Costa Pacifica, a sister to the existing Costa Concordia and Costa Serena, will enter service in Spring 2009 along with the mid-sized Costa Luminosa (which also has a sister ship on order for Spring 2010).
Before we get to the photos, kudos to Costa for one of the best names I’ve heard for a new ship in a while; “pacific” of course means “peaceful” and so Pacifica goes very nicely with Concordia and Serena. One wonders what Luminosa’s sister ship will be called…
