A New Odyssey for Seabourn

Seabourn Cruise Line has announced the name of the first of its upcoming newbuilds: Seabourn Odyssey.

According to Seabourn President Pamela Conover:

“There were literally hundreds of names that we considered, and we pursued dozens of different directions. But in the end, we wanted her name to reflect her primary purpose, which is to wander the globe, carrying our guests to the world’s most exciting and fascinating destinations, in signature Seabourn luxury and style.”

The new name may remind some of the late, great Royal Cruise Line, whose ships’ names all ended in “Odyssey”, e.g. Golden Odyssey, Royal Odyssey, Crown Odyssey and so on. (Crown Odyssey also operated as such for Orient Lines.) Other “Odysseys” include the once Oceanic Odyssey, now Clipper Odyssey.

Seabourn Odyssey, a 30,000 GT, 450-passenger ship designed by Yran & Storbraaten in conjunction with Fincantieri, is currently under construction at T. Mariotti in Genoa and will enter service in June 2009. She will be the first newbuild for Seabourn since Seabourn Spirit entered service 20 years earlier.
