While its main Alaska vessel, Empress of the North, continues to undergo repairs after a grounding incident last month, Majestic America Line’s much smaller Contessa will enter service on her first voyage for the company on 10 June.
The 48-passenger, 490 GT (yes, that’s 490, not 4,900) ship was originally built in 1986 as Executive Explorer and sailed for the defunct Glacier Bay Cruiseline until the company went bankrupt in late 2005. The ship, unique as the only small catamaran offering cruises in Alaska, was purchased by MAL in 2006 and refurbished. GBC was also a sister company of Great American River Journeys, the company which briefly operated Columbia Queen before going bankrupt; that ship was also acquired by MAL in 2006 and recently entered service for them.
